Screen recording permission
Understand and fix the macOS Screen & System Audio Recording prompt.
Why macOS asks
ShutterDock needs Screen Recording or Screen & System Audio Recording permission before it can capture screenshots or make screen recordings. This is a macOS privacy control for all screenshot and screen recording utilities.
Microphone permission is requested only if you choose to include microphone audio in a recording. System audio is shown only when your macOS version and ShutterDock plan support it.
Screen recording never starts on launch. It starts only after you choose Record Screen, and a red timer control stays visible so you can stop recording at any time. Recordings stay local unless you choose an export or sharing action.
Enable permission
- Open System Settings.
- Choose Privacy & Security.
- Open Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Enable ShutterDock.
- Return to ShutterDock and use the retry permission button. If macOS still blocks capture, quit and reopen ShutterDock.
If the app is missing
Open ShutterDock once, start a capture, and return to System Settings. macOS usually lists the app after the first permission request.
Recording limits
Free users can record up to 90 seconds. ShutterDock Pro unlocks unlimited recording and system audio where macOS supports it. If purchase or entitlement data is temporarily unavailable, ShutterDock keeps basic recording available with the free limit.
